Creationism

Currently, ‘creationism’ gets a bad press and those who subscribe to it are sometimes classed with fascists, racists and homophobes. However, what is frequently forgotten is that Christianity, in all its expressions, is creationist in a general sense, namely that the universe has a Creator. Christians disagree as to how the process of creation actually came into effect and the timescales which were involved. The popular view of ‘creationism’ is based on a misunderstanding of how the church variously interprets the Bible, failing to distinguish between arguments for literal and metaphorical positions. While these debates are of considerable theological significance and while a degree of humility is required in drawing conclusions about the distant past, Intelligent Design does not concern itself with religious authority or Biblical positions, but focusses rather on the scientific case for design in Nature. However, it is also the case that ID lends weight to a theistic view of the universe.
